Ian & Sylvia were among the most influential folk duos of their generation. Consisting of Ian Tyson and Sylvia Tyson, née Fricker, the pair began performing together in Toronto in 1959. Their partnership quickly gained attention within Canada’s growing folk scene before expanding beyond national borders. By 1962, they had moved to New York City, where they attracted the interest of renowned manager Albert Grossman, who also worked with Peter, Paul and Mary and later managed Bob Dylan. Through Grossman’s support, the duo secured a recording contract with Vanguard Records and released their debut album later that year.
The success of Ian & Sylvia was built on a combination of musical authenticity, strong vocal harmonies, and a genuine connection to traditional and contemporary folk material. Between 1962 and 1968, they recorded seven studio albums for Vanguard, producing a remarkable collection of eighty seven songs that helped establish their reputation throughout North America.
The story behind the duo is equally compelling. Ian Tyson, born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1933, originally pursued a career in rodeo before injuries led him to learn guitar. Sylvia Tyson, born in Chatham, Ontario, in 1940, became involved in Toronto’s folk club scene while still a teenager. Their shared passion for music brought them together both professionally and personally. The couple married in 1964 and continued performing together until their separation and eventual divorce in 1975.
Today, Nova Scotia Farewell remains more than a song about a place. It serves as a musical reflection on home, distance, and memory, themes that continue to connect listeners with the enduring legacy of Ian & Sylvia and the rich traditions of Canadian folk music.
